Пять решений Верховного суда США (1883), постановившего, что федеральные гарантии от расовой дискриминации, содержавшиеся в Поправках периода Гражданской войны [Civil War Amendments] и Законе о гражданских правах 1875 года [Civil Rights Act of 1875], имели отношение только к защите политических и гражданских прав от нарушений штатами, но не отдельными лицами. Решение привело к ослаблению Четырнадцатой [Fourteenth Amendment] и Пятнадцатой [Fifteenth Amendment] поправок
